Going the extra mile

Dalton’s flying high in a new sector

A Nottingham man who lost his job during the Covid-19 pandemic has thanked the Restart Scheme for helping him back into work in a new sector.

Not only did Dalton Samuels, 65, clinch a new job thanks to the support from the Restart Scheme, but just five weeks later, he celebrated a hard-earned promotion.

Dalton had been out of work for two years when he joined the Restart Scheme in December 2021.

Dalton previously worked as Front of House in the hospitality sector. But at the start of the Covid pandemic, the establishment closed down and he found himself unemployed.

When Dalton met his Employment Advisor Annabel, it became clear his lack of knowledge around basic technology and Microsoft programmes was a key barrier to him returning to employment.

To help him to improve his digital skills, Annabel directed Dalton to the Maximus Employment Support Hub to utilise the Microsoft for Beginners and Tech Support courses. Annabel also supported him with updating his CV and searching for jobs.

A vacancy for a Ward Host was listed by the Recruitment team. Annabel put Dalton forward for an initial interview with Account Manager Amandeep, before a telephone and face-to-face interview with the employer.

His interviews were successful and Dalton started his new job as a Ward Host in March.

Once he was in work, the Restart Scheme helped Dalton to buy new clothing and helped him with his first month of travel costs. After just five weeks in his new role, Dalton was promoted.

Speaking of his journey on the Restart Scheme, Dalton said: “Annabel, my advisor, was fantastic, offering great support to me with my CV and job searching. She was incredibly dedicated and hardworking and was fantastic to work with. I want to thank her for her professionalism and dedication to myself and I am sure many others.

“I would highly recommend the scheme to anybody who wants to get back into work, everyone who works there is brilliant and tremendously professional. Reece and Annabel in particular were always willing to go the extra mile to help me! I never considered that I could work in a job like this, but now it really suits me, and I am really enjoying myself in my new role!”
