Johnson rebuilds his career after illness

After more than a year out of work, 62-year-old Johnson, from Newham, was determined to return to the labour market. Drawing on his background in security, both as a paid employee and a volunteer, he was eager to return to the sector he knew.
Johnson joined the Restart Scheme for additional support and was paired with an Employment Advisor who identified Johnson’s main challenges holding him back – ongoing physical health issues, gaps in his skills and experience and a lack of confidence.
To help address these barriers, Johnson was provided with a personalised plan. He worked on refreshing his CV, accessed our Employment Support Hub to complete online employability development sessions as well as taking part in employment coaching and job search workshops.
With updated skills, his confidence improved, and he felt prepared to re-enter the workforce and begin applying for roles. Following interview coaching and guidance from his advisor, Johnson successfully interviewed for a local Security Officer role.
Reflecting on his experience, Johnson said: “This has been a rewarding and satisfactory period considering where I was after my prolonged illness and recovery. My advisor has been amazing and is the most professional, understanding person of all time. My heartfelt thanks go to all the team for helping me move from my former position to being employed. Thank you.”
