Louise secures a new role after struggles during the pandemic
When Louise, 50, from Greenwich, lost her job before the pandemic, she was unaware of the challenges she would face returning to work as an at-risk individual with Sickle Cell disease.
Louise explained: “My academic background is rooted in genetic research, specifically focusing on rare disorders in children. I’ve worked as a post-doctoral scientist at both Great Ormond Street Hospital and The Institute of Child Health. However, a week before lockdown in 2020, I was made redundant, and life took a difficult turn.”
As a result of the pandemic and progressive lockdowns, several interviews were cancelled, and she struggled to cope financially. Her job search became increasingly difficult when she found out she had to isolate for over a year.
Despite being highly qualified, there were very few roles available in the biomedical research sector.
“To make ends meet, I took on several short-term positions, balancing financial needs with my health requirements. By February 2023, I was unemployed again. My confidence hit an all-time low, and I felt deeply depressed about my situation.”
Her local jobcentre referred her to the Restart Scheme, delivered by our partners, Greenwich Local Labour and Business (GLLaB) service in her area. She was quickly introduced to her Employment Advisor, David Famosa, who began to provide the tailored help that Louise needed.
David helped Louise re-write her CV and prepare cover letters whilst also assisting in services like DBS checks and financial aid.
“David and his colleagues provided unwavering support. They not only boosted my confidence but also helped me recognise my vast skillset, which I had overlooked when considering various roles. Our one-on-one fortnightly chats became a lifeline, ensuring my well-being during this challenging period.”
Soon, Louise attended a local networking event and secured a new role as an Administration Manager at a school for children with special educational needs. Now Louise is excited for the future and looking forward to further expanding her skillset in civil services or genetic counselling.
Reflecting on the support, she added: “I’m now gaining confidence and adapting well to my new responsibilities, Despite the hardships, I’m grateful for the journey and the newfound hope that the Restart Scheme provided.”
