Participant rebuilds his career with confidence

Determined for a fresh start after eight months out of work, 60-year-old Roland, from Newham, had his sights set on a new career in the security sector.

Despite his previous retail experience, he no longer wanted to return to the industry, so having already completed his SIA training before joining the Restart Scheme in October 2024, Roland was eager to move forward.

However, despite completing the training, he hadn’t yet obtained his licence, lacked confidence in using technology and hadn’t attended a job interview for several years – all of which left him uncertain about his next steps.

Supported by his Employment Advisor, Roland researched the SIA application process and gathered all the necessary documentation. When he discovered his driving licence, which was needed as proof of address, had expired, Maximus financed the renewal.

Whilst waiting for his licence to arrive, Roland completed employability development sessions, created a new CV and attended interview coaching before starting to apply for security roles.

When an opportunity was identified with a security firm, his advisor supported him through the complex vetting process, which required multiple documents. Liaising directly with the employer to clarify requirements, his advisor successfully negotiated an extension in the vetting deadline to ensure that Roland could gather everything he needed.

To further support his journey back to work, Roland received support with travel expenses and help applying for a 60+ Oyster card. After completing the vetting process, he was faced with a new challenge: no shifts were being assigned because he hadn’t completed the company’s online training via their app. Unfamiliar with the technology, Roland again turned to his advisor, who helped him complete the app setup and training.

Roland began working as a Door Supervisor, averaging 24 hours per week. He remains keen to increase his hours and continue building a long-term career in the sector.
