Refugee Zayd secures work in the UK
When Zayd*, 43, sought refuge in the UK after leaving Tanzania, he didn’t anticipate he would have difficulties finding work.
Despite having a background in transport and logistics, without any UK work experience, he found the labour market difficult to navigate.

He explained: “As a refugee who had never worked in the UK before, I was eager to seize any opportunity that came my way.”
Zayd was already working towards his Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence when he joined the Restart Scheme in Greenwich in May 2024. Supported by our partners, Greenwich Local Labour and Business (GLLaB), his Employment Advisor, Trevor Hung quickly recognised his enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
He explained: “As a refugee who had never worked in the UK before, I was eager to seize any opportunity that came my way. He suggested that I complete an online Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) training course to become a cleaner. I was determined to make the most of this opportunity and finished the training within just two hours.”
Zayd’s enthusiasm to learn and start work as soon as possible led to new opportunities, including several customer service roles.
“Within just ten days, I had two interviews and to my delight I received a job offer.”
Zayd has embraced his new role and has a renewed sense of purpose and optimism about his future working in the UK.
He added: “This role gives me valuable experience and a strong foundation for my career in the UK. I’m grateful for the Restart Scheme’s support and the team’s belief in my potential. This opportunity has renewed my optimism, and I’m excited to contribute to my new community.”
