Delivering a fresh start
Maximus delivers a fresh start for Yasinthan
Yasinthan, 40, from Sutton joined the Restart Scheme in August 2022. After struggling in his home country of Sri Lanka, Yasinthan arrived in the UK five years ago as a refugee searching for a new start.
In Sutton, Maximus is working together with Reed in Partnership who supported Yasinthan back into employment.
Yasinthan had previously worked as an accountant in his family business but didn’t have any work experience in the UK which meant he struggled to find employment. Additionally, he was suffering with physical and mental health problems that stemmed from his time in Sri Lanka.
When he first joined the scheme and met with his Employment Advisor, Don Lewis, Yasinthan was referred to a wellbeing workshop that supported him with his mental and physical health.
Yasinthan also completed various skills workshops and worked with Don to identify and apply for potential roles that would suit him.
He attended sessions on identifying jobs and completing application forms, all of which helped to improve his skills and prepare him for employment.
These regular one-to-one sessions helped provide Yasinthan with much needed encouragement and support.
In November 2022, Don helped Yasinthan apply for a mail sorter position. He was elated when he secured the role and started a week later.
Yasinthan said: “Don was incredibly helpful and supportive. He was available whenever I needed him and went above and beyond to ensure I could start working. Everyone at the Restart Scheme has been incredibly helpful, I am now very confident about my future with the UK as my new home.”
Don explained: “Yasinthan was the ideal participant. He was very motivated and determined to better himself. He was fully engaged with me and would complete all the tasks I assigned him. I am extremely proud of Yasinthan considering how far he has come, and I am looking forward to seeing how he develops!”
